Today I met a Buddhist monk, Ven. B. Dewananda Thera, from Sri Lanka. Knowing that there might still be some unrest in Sri Lanka, I asked if he had been there recently and if I should go. He is going to Sri Lanka in February and invited me to travel with him. Of course, I am going. It is apparently normal for monks to gather up folks to travel with them and he extended the invitation to anybody I know. If you are interested, please contact me.

Even when there was a war going on there, my understanding was that most of Sri Lanka was safe to visit (there were just one or two northern districts that one probably couldn't get to as a tourist anyway).  Anyway, I guess you are probably there now so know this first hand!  A friend of mine took her bike there about a year ago when there still was a war and she still felt much safer than she did in India where there is no war...it could have had something to do with the number of cars ;-). Safe travels!
